TODS FEATURED SPEAKER

THE MYTHS OF PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

Dr. David Rothman

Session Date:  Thursday October 19, 2023

Session Time:  6 PM – 9 PM

Presenter Name: Dr. David Rothman

Outline:

We do what we were taught in dental school despite time and research passing us by. We sometimes jump on the bandwagon because something sounds good but may be of dubious scientific backing. In this presentation, we’ll look at commonly held but not scientifically based myths in kid’s dentistry that have been perpetuated by dentists and the “Lay” media for years (including many old wives’ tales that have been around for 5000 years in Hindu and Sumarian writings which are still practiced or believed.). These will include local anesthesia, the notorious minimally invasive dentistry, restorations, pulp therapy and crowns, preventive dentistry, growth and development including treating the frenum, radiography and behavior management. We’ll look at the difference between common sense, science and factless fantasy promulgated by Influencers on social media, salespersons and in trade publications. Appropriate for all members of the dental team.

Objectives:

  • to review how to read and evaluate literature for scientific merit
  • to learn and incorporate procedures which have been scientifically evaluated and reviewed
  • to be able to discuss with scientific acumen, the new procedures and materials which are rolled out each year in a never ending array of options
