Session Date:  Friday October 20, 2023

Session Time:  1:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Presenter Name: Dr. Bahram Jam, PT

Outline:

An Interactive Practical Session

There continues to be an over-emphasis on structural-based treatments for temporomandibular disorders (TMD) using various intricate manual therapies, splints, injections and surgeries to “fix” specific structural lesions. The current evidence based on systematic reviews supports the existence of widespread pressure pain sensitivity and central sensitization in patients with TMD.

Clinical Implications: With greater awareness of the existence of central pain, clinicians may reduce their focus on blaming structural lesions for persistent TMJ symptoms which may lead to increasing patient fear of their benign condition.

Learning objectives:

    1. Review basic classification for TMD.
    2. Identify TMD presenting as either nociceptive or centrally sensitized pain using simple assessment skills.
    3. Apply muscular retraining exercises not with the intention of “fixing” but with the intention of desensitizing.
    4. Review management options for patients presenting with persistent TMJ pain syndromes who are unresponsive to typical management strategies.
