This presentation addresses the recent rise in treatments aimed at swiftly aligning anterior teeth to enhance aesthetic appeal. Examples such as fast braces, social six treatment, and fast track appliance, are readily available on online platforms.
Evidence-based research published in peer-reviewed journals indicate more than 51% of orthodontic patients exhibit sagittal discrepancies exceeding 5 mm. Addressing these cases necessitates more than just anterior alignment; it entails correcting posterior buccal segments to achieve a stable, mutually protected occlusion. This occlusion not only disoccludes the anterior teeth but also supports their long-term stability and aesthetic enhancement, particularly the anterior social six.
The presentation will provide a brief overview of appliances traditionally employed for correcting buccal segments, highlighting their evolution over time. Additionally, it will introduce Beta testing results on the Facilitator intraoral device designed to aid distalization of maxillary molars, addressing a crucial aspect of orthodontic treatment aimed at achieving optimal facial and skeletodental balance.
Central to the discussion will be Andrews’ six keys to facial and skeletodental balance, emphasizing the importance of a mutually protected occlusion in safeguarding the stability of anterior dentition. About The Speaker
Dr. Bruce Oliver is a board-certified orthodontist and past examiner for Fellow of the Royal College. Over the past 40 years he has been involved in teaching, research, and private practice. In addition Dr. Oliver has served on several hospital teaching boards, committees, and executive positions at provincial and national dental associations while publishing several peer reviewed articles.
During his career he has developed an interest in techniques for achieving molar distalization, working in collaboration with engineering specialists in medical prosthesis design and development. Research in this area has lead to development of an intra-oral unidirectional molar distalization appliance with patents in both United States and Canada.
Need for Molar distalization is a procedure that every orthodontist will encounter as surveys confirm that 1/3 of patients exhibit anteroposterior discrepancies of 5mm or greater. Headgears were utilized to achieve molar distalization however as cooperation may be an issue, non-compliant appliances either intraarch or interrarch of various types have been proposed for Class II correction. Maxillary molar distalization using non compliant appliances has been shown to cause unavoidable and unwanted anterior anchorage loss.
This presentation will review some of the concerns with molar distalization, the newer techniques and devices utilized in Class II correction, introduce the Facilitator, and review results of initial Beta testing on the device.
