Surgical Assisting Basics For CDAs – Sustainable Sterile Technique In Dentistry

Session #2 – Saturday October 22, 2022 – 8:30am to 12:30pm (repeated)

Outline:
The student will be introduced to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to perform as a surgical CDA. The focus of this hands-on workshop is sterile technique and an overview of the accompanying surgical procedures performed in dentistry: e.g. implants & grafting.

Introduction to advanced skills, and translation to practice is the focus of this workshop.
Handouts: Will be provided online. Supplies: All clinical supplies and resources are included.

Admission Requirements
The participants must be Certified Dental Assistants in good standing with their provincial licensing bodies.

At the end of this workshop students will be able to:

  1. Identify and perform the duties of a CDA during the 3 phases of the perioperative period as a member of the surgical team.
    Goal: Provide quality patient care before, during, and after surgery.
  2. Identify and apply clean, aseptic, and sterile techniques required for surgical procedures in dentistry.
    Goal: Prevent nosocomial (healthcare associated) infections.
  3. Identify and select dedicated armamentarium required for surgical procedures in dentistry.
    Goal: Become a knowledgeable and valued member of the surgical team.
  4. Source and employ sustainable sundries.
    Goal: Reduce operating costs and eliminate waste from surgical procedures.

Ms. Kathryn Truant, CDA, MEd, ID

Biography

Ms. Kathryn Truant, CDA, MEd, ID is a part-time clinical instructor in the Certified Dental Assistant program at Okanagan College. She also works in the dental community as a surgical CDA and consultant. Kathryn’s experience as an educator and a practicing CDA informs this workshop.

Kathryn is an alumna of the Okanagan College CDA program with many years of experience as a CDA in the dental community. She has a Provincial Instructor Diploma from Vancouver Community College, and a Master of Education Degree from Simon Fraser University in Curriculum and Instruction Post-Secondary.
