Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office: Are You Ready?

Course Outline:

This interactive session will review common and/or important medical emergencies in the dental office. Our discussion will range from common causes of medical issues to uncommon threats to patient safety to how to organize your emergency kits using scenarios for clinical context. Because proper management of urgencies and emergencies requires proper preparation, we will spend time discussing in overview and in detail how to prepare our office (i.e. drugs and equipment) and how to prepare ourselves and our teams for the statistically inevitable. A dental practice will encounter a medical emergency once every 18 months. Are you ready? 

Learning Objectives: 

• To review the incidence and etiology of common medical emergencies 
• To refine medical history reviews and patient assessment 
• To better recognize and diagnose medical emergencies 
• To improve the protocols to manage medical emergencies in the office 
• To review medical emergency drugs and equipment, including their proper use and drug dosages 
• To establish management algorithms for in-office medical emergencies

Dr. Peter Nkansah

Biography

Peter Nkansah, MSc, DDS, Dip. Anaes., FADSA, Specialist in Dental Anaes. (ON), FPFA, FACD received both his DDS degree and Diploma in Dental Anaesthesia from the University of Toronto. He is a certified specialist in Dental Anaesthesia and maintains a private practice at Sleep For Dentistry in Toronto. In addition, he is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry.

Dr. Nkansah is a Course Director for both the conscious sedation continuing dental education course at Western University (Canada) and for Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support courses at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He is a member of the editorial board for the dental journal Oral Health. He is also a regular lecturer for dental groups nationally and internationally. On the sports front, one of his other areas of interest, Peter is the team dentist for the Toronto FC of the MLS, the Raptors905 of the NBA’s G-League, and the Toronto Raptors of the NBA.
