The Special Olympics BC is hosting the BC Winter Games in Kamloops February 2-4, 2023, and will offer athletes the opportunity to participate in the Healthy Athletes program, of which Special Smiles (oral health screening and education) will be a part of. Screenings will take place on February 3 from 2:30-9:00 PM. We are seeking 15-20 volunteers (dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants…) to help screen and provide education to the anticipated 200-300 athletes who will be visiting the venue that day.
Anyone interested in volunteering can email Ms. Bailey Macklem, Special Olympics Sports Coordinator for British Columbia at bmacklem@specialolympics.bc.ca directly to sign up for the February 3 screening event. She would need to know what t-shirt size you wear and if you have any dietary restrictions.
We ask volunteers to arrive 1 hour before the event begins, in order to be oriented to the Special Smiles program and be calibrated. Also, individuals should plan to bring their own water bottle. Shelly Chaisson (lead Clinical Director) and Dr. Ellen Wu will travel from Vancouver to oversee and coordinate the Special Smiles program.
