Crown lengthening procedures may be provided in order to facilitate Restorative/Prosthetic therapy and/or improve esthetics. In order to make the correct diagnosis, this lecture course will illustrate the indications and contraindications for utilization of Crown Lengthening surgery. Techniques for soft and hard tissue management needed in functional and esthetic crown lengthening surgery procedures will be discussed. Clinical cases will be presented in order to understand the decision making process in flap design, resective osseous management, suturing techniques, and postoperative protocols.

Learning objectives:

  • Review indications and contraindications for functional Crown Lengthening
  • Discuss diagnosis of Altered Passive Eruption
  • Review basic periodontal anatomy in health and anatomy associated with periodontitis
  • Review the concept of the biologic Width relative to restorative management
  • Review the concept  of the ferrule for a successful prosthetic outcome
  • Review indications for Aesthetic crown lengthening.
  • Review various surgical flap designs.
  • Review resective management of osseous tissues, ostectomy and osteoplasty.
  • Review suturing techniques and suture materials.
  • Learn postoperative management.

Biography

Dr. Tim Hempton is a former clinical instructor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Presently, he is an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine were he serves as the Assistant Director of the postdoctoral program in Periodontology. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry and also maintains a private practice Limited to Periodontics and Dental Implants in Dedham, MA. He has lectured at the several previous ADA Annual Meetings as well as many regional dental meetings throughout the United States.
