Since 1991, the British Columbia Dental Association’s Save a Smile (SAS) program has been supporting BC children in need of urgent dental care. SAS is a community-based direct care program that works in partnership with dental public health staff across BC to ensure that children without access to public or private dental plan coverage receive the dental care they urgently need. In addition to providing urgent treatment through private practice dentists, dental public health staff provide parent education to prevent dental problems from recurring.
Healthy smiles, happier kids Dental disease has a tremendous impact on children. Untreated problems can cause pain; interfere with sleep; affect concentration and attendance at school; influence nutrition; and create barriers to socialization. Through the SAS program the care needs of nearly 1,400 children have been met.
100% of all funds raised for SAS are directed to patient care Meeting children’s dental care needs would not be possible without the generosity of BC dentists and corporate supporters. Net proceeds from the Toothfairy Gala are the main source of funding for SAS. This event along with annual contributions from BC dentists augment the Alec Gunning Save a Smile Endowment Fund which was established by the estate of Dr. Alec Gunning – a Victoria dentist who believed strongly in early dental care for young children. Through Dr. Gunning’s legacy and the ongoing contributions of supporters, SAS continues to ensure that BC children have the dental care they require to be healthy and feel confident.

Congratulations to the
Vernon Community Dental Access Centre!
On Thursday, January 17th, 2013 The Community Dental Access Centre, in Vernon, held its Official Grand Opening. The event celebrated the fruition of a 10 year initiative to bring low cost dental health care to North Okanagan residents via a non profit dental centre.
The Centre opened it’s doors in September of 2012. It is currently open 2 days a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 9am – 1pm and 2 pm – 5 pm. Additional hours are added as needed for urgent care and special clinics. Registrants must be low income and meet eligibiltiy criteria. The services are not free, but greatly reduced from 20-40% depending on the clients net income.
“The support that we have received from our volunteers and donors from the community, businesses, organizations and foundations is the core of our success” says Terri Jones, Executive Director. “We can’t provide the services and keep the Centre open without them.” “Our Open House is our way of celebrating with them.” ”It actually turn out better than we imagined, we had 3 retired dentists doing the flooring, tiling and finish carpentry and getting the equipment set up and working. It turned out so nice because of them, Dr.Bob Kersey, Dr.Vic Lemp and Dr. Dave Danskin. Linda Lutz from Patterson Dental was amazing too!”
“We’re very excited that the Community Dental Access Centre is open and serving clients in our community,” says CDAC board president, Dr.Victor Lepp, a retired orthodontist. “You would be surprised at how many people’s employability is impacted by poor oral health.” You would also be surprised by how many visits are made to medical doctors and the hospital emergency due to dental infections and pain. We hope that by offering low cost dental services to low income residents that we can resolve many of these issues.”
In order to help those who cannot afford dental services even at reduced rates the Community Dental Access Centre has created a 224 Smile Saver club (2 give is to 2 change a life, 4 ever.) Donations through this club can be directed to the Angel Fund to help those in urgent need of dental services and with no means to pay. Please contact CDAC or visit their website: www.communitydentalaccess.ca for more information.
The Community Dental Access Centre serves North Okanagan residents in Vernon, Coldstream, Lumby, Cherryville, Spallumcheen, Armstrong, Enderby, Grindrod, Fintry and Falkland.
